The world is at his feet... and CQU “sparked the flame” to get him to the top.

Glenmore State High School captain Colin Harris is the first to admit he used to be a “no-hoper” before he realised his dream. And now he is getting ready to travel the world, experiencing university life, research centres, landmarks and leaving his mark wherever he can.

He explains his transformation began with a revelation that occurred at Central Queensland University’s Get Set For Uni program. The program aimed at giving year 10 students an insight into university Engineering, Science and Technology programs.

“It was my science teacher Mr (Chris) Champion who inspired me to attend the CQU program in year 10,” Colin said. “It was here I discovered CHEMISTRY.” “We did basic experiments, learned about university life and it gave me a boost in confidence. It was the spark that started the flame.” From here Colin knew he wanted to study science and it gave him the inspiration to learn more and more. Two years later, Colin has just returned from the National Youth Science Forum where he has been chosen out of 4000 students to travel around the world visiting Geneva, Germany, South Africa and London.

Colin said it was not just because of his knowledge that he was chosen for this special event, but also because of his enthusiasm.

“They were looking for an interactive student, someone who is a good communicator,” Colin said.

And Colin is certainly that. Having already presented motivational speeches at schools, Colin exudes confidence and is inspirational to all he encounters.

Colin is trying to keep ahead with his Year 12 studies before his overseas tour as he foresees his life becoming increasingly busy after returning to Australia. He is expecting to be invited to Canberra as a mentor for the Australian Youth Science Forum. He will be required to lecture on his experiences and inspire other students to take part in the forum next year.

With plans to complete a chemical engineering degree after graduating this year, Colin is placed in a good position to succeed.
