London-based music theatre graduate back in Australia to perform

Of all the things Madeline Cain gained studying CQUniversity's Music Theatre program in Mackay a decade ago, the most important was a supportive and understanding husband.

Madeline met her husband Jordan Ybarzabal while they were both studying at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music on Mackay Campus.

The couple have since travelled the world to pursue performance and production opportunities. Though they call Melbourne 'home' and have just bought a house there, they have recently been based in London.

Madeline has been back on the Australia theatre radar lately as she is booked to perform in Brisbane on March 2 with acclaimed American composers John Bucchino and Georgia Stitt, and on March 6 in Melbourne with Georgia Stitt. Meanwhile, Jordan is production co-ordinator of the tour and masterclasses of Jason Robert Brown, Georgia Stitt and John Bucchino.

During her time as a student in Mackay, Madeline performed in Closer Than Ever with director John Wregg, Kiss Me Kate with Nancye Hayes, the Sound of Music (Maria) with Michael Turkic and the operetta Chu Chin Chow (Marjanah).

"I learnt a lot in my time at the Con and can still hear Garrick Jones' voice and Lyn Denny's voice in my head from time to time," she said.

"After graduating I was lead singer on the Pacific Princess cruises for 12 months and was lead vocalist at Tokyo Disney Sea's Broadway Revue, Encore!

"I did Cats for two years with the Really Useful Group, with the Australian cast touring China, Korea, Thailand and Taiwan. It was an amazing experience working with director/choreographer Joanne Robinson. Joanne worked alongside Trevor Nunn on the original Cats production on the West End."

Madeline was also in the Australian cast for Jekyll & Hyde and teaches singing when she is not performing.

"I love teaching singing and find it very rewarding," she says.

Commenting on the Bucchino-Stitt concerts, Madeline notes that she worked with her husband (as director) to produce a concert of Georgia Stitt's work in 2010.

"It was very exciting and scary. We contacted her after falling in love with her music and she put us onto her manager and so with her help and her manager's help we produced a night of her work.

"It received a great review and she was wonderful to 'work' with, via email. So both she and I are very excited to get to work together and meet each other. I performed the Australian premiere the Alphabet City Cycle and look forward to performing those songs again with her. John's songs are gorgeous; I got to choose what I wanted to sing and am thrilled. The two concerts will be sensational."
