Prime Minister Julia Gillard with DVC Jennelle KydPrime Minister Julia Gillard dropped in to CQUniversity during her tour of the flood-effected region on Saturday, spending time at the Red Cross Evacuation Centre in the University's Community Sports Complex.
Prime Minister Gillard was guided around the Evacuation Centre by Acting Vice Chancellor Jennelle Kyd, and Red Cross Centre Coordinator Tim McInerny.
The Prime Minister spent almost an hour chatting with evacuees, Red Cross volunteers, and University representatives.
Acting Vice Chancellor Jennelle Kyd said the visit was an ideal opportunity to remind the PM of the University's strong engagement with the local community.
"The Prime Minister had not forgotten her previous visit to the University's Sports Complex to acknowledge Federal Funding that had been used to deliver important upgrades to the facility, including air-conditioning," Acting VC Kyd said.
"I was pleased to be able to show the Prime Minister firsthand the direct benefit that investment has had not only to the CQUniversity community, but to the entire Rockhampton community as well.
"The Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to CQUniversity for throwing our doors open to The Red Cross and the 130+ evacuees, and for making so many of our resources available."

Among the Prime Minister's official entourage were members of the Australian Army, who after seeing the number of children at the Evacuation Centre, decided to make a Blackhawk Helicopter available to touch down beside the facility.
Arrangements were quickly made with University Security and The Red Cross, and the next morning a giant BlackHawk Helicopter landed on the field beside the Evacuation Centre, which sent the kids into meltdown. For many kids, the visit from the Blackhawk proved even more exciting than the visit from the Prime Minister!
