First Aussie production of 'High School Musical' a sold-out success
Published on 03 May, 2007
The first Australian stage production based on Disney's popular 'High School Musical' movie has been a sold-out success, with audiences flocking to the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) Theatre in Mackay last weekend.
Bachelor of Music Theatre students provided 7 sold-out shows to a total of 1400 people over 3 days in the small but fully functional CQCM Theatre.
The students involved with the production had the experience of working with visiting industry mentor Drew Anthony (pictured below), a renowned producer, director, choreographer and actor, known as band leader of 'The Fabulous Rhythm Boys', as creator of dancecamp.biz, and as the owner and operator of Brent Street Studios. Drew has an affinity with Mackay, having been born in the sugar city, but has since travelled the world with his profession.
For those who may have missed the movie or the stage show, the plot is described: While on a New Year's Eve vacation, high school hoops star Troy & brainy Gabriella - 2 teens who are worlds apart - meet. During a karaoke contest they discover their love for singing & an interest in each other. After vacation, Troy finds out that Gabriella is the new girl at his school. Troy & Gabriella decide to audition for the upcoming high school musical. Troy's best friend Chad and Gabriella's new friend Taylor discourage them from moving forward with their plans. But it's Ryan & his sister Sharpay - considered the school's top theatrical talents - who really try to thwart their efforts. Find out how Gabriella and Troy's decision to audition turns their world and their school upside down!
