Mathematicians of the future sum it up

Over 200 primary school students from Koumala to Bowen, years 5 to 7, attended the McDonald’s Mathematics Competition held at North Mackay High School recently.
The event was organised due to remarkable efforts and contribution by Lyndley Kynaston (Coordinator, Learning Development Centre, Gifted and Talented Students) and Paul Waters (Maths Head of Department, Mackay North State High School).
This initiative in Mackay started several years ago and resonates well with current developments to strengthen education in mathematics in the country and with the establishment of the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics.
CQU Mackay’s Associate Professor Victor Korotkikh gave up his morning to judge the competition and to assist with any advanced problems.
The competition involved students working collaboratively in teams of five to solve various mathematical problems.
“The mathematics competition enables students to enjoy the challenges of mathematics and could lead them into tertiary studies,” Associate Professor Victor Korotkikh said.
