Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

CQUniversity Centre for Plant and Water Science representatives attended the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation (NPSI) project workshop held in Canberra recently (Sept 2-3).

NPSI invests in research, development and adoption to improve productivity and sustainability of irrigation in Australia.

The organisation has funded 15 research projects for the 2008-2010 round, and CQUniversity's Professor David Midmore has been successful in attracting one of the biggest funding allocations of $267,640.

Professor Midmore's funded project is for 'Optimising delivery and benefits of aerated irrigation water' for extending current CPWS innovation on oxygation research to a range of fruits, vegetable, pasture and cotton industries.

CQUniversity Plant and Water Science post doctoral fellow Dr Surya Bhattarai presented the background and outline of the research activities and collaboration on the project.

Two PhD scholars - Jay Dhungel and Lance Pendergast - also actively participated and contributed in the workshop.

"Our active participation in this planning workshop was extremely useful for sharing CQUniversity achievements on oxygation research with broader research, development and industry communities, as well as developing useful linkages and collaborations for the current and future projects, Dr Bhattarai said.

"This workshop included more than 40 people from different research providers and support organizations."

Dr Bhattarai and Jay Dhungel also visited the University of Melbourne on September 4, and presented a seminar to the Melbourne School of Land and Environment on 'Aerated water irrigation (oxygation) for crop production: current research and industry application'.

"It was an excellent time to present our work and to discuss different aspects of research on oxygation and opportunities for future collaboration with the researchers in the University of Melbourne.

"Researchers and postgraduate students from Land and Environment actively took part in the presentation and discussion.

"CQUniversity-pioneered oxygation research has started gathering greater interest locally, nationally and internationally by the research, development practitioners and irrigation industries."
