Coffee cups prevalent in recycling audit

CQUniversity is examining a recycling proposal from the CQ Local Government Association and the Product Stewardship Forum, which could help to provide a coordinated strategy.

As part of the proposal assessment, Health, Safety and Environmental Officer Brendan Taylor and Division of Facilities Management Grounds Project Officer Leigh Portch have been reviewing the results of a waste audit recently conducted in public areas of Rockhampton Campus.

The audit found that more than 65% of waste from these areas could possibly be recycled, including 20% made up of coffee cups.

Both Brendan and Leigh have been examining the potential for recycling by various units around campus, which could lead to 'tailor-made' strategies, with the possibility of extending the program to other CQUniversity campuses.

While there is some collection of recyclables on campus through Rockhampton Regional Council and Endeavour Foundation bins, both consider it more advantageous to implement a coordinated effort.
