CQU in bid for landmark bullying study

CQU is part of a bid for an Australian Research Council Linkage Project grant which, if successful, would create the nation's most comprehensive study of workplace bullying and occupational violence.

CQU Bundaberg academic Dr Christine Murphy and new Dean of Business & Law Professor Catherine Smith are our collaborators for the highly competitive bid process.

The bid will be submitted by CQU, Griffith University, University of Bergen (Norway), the Northern Territory Government and the Territory's Employee Assistance Sevices.

The same team was behind this week's publication of results from a Northern Territory Public Service work environment survey, which showed that 52.1 per cent of respondents reported they had never been bullied, 22.7 reported bullying now and then, while 12.7 per cent report monthly, weekly or daily bullying.

The bullying behaviour most reported was "someone withholding information which affects performance". The next most-reported behaviours were being ignored/excluded; having your opinions or views ignored; and being ordered to work below your level of competence.

The team behind the NTPS survey is now applying for an ARC Linkage Project grant (with Professor Stale Einarsen - a leading international authority on bullying) to develop and implement appropriate strategies to respond to issues identified in the survey.
