Mental Health on the Agenda

Central Queensland University’s Dr Lorna Moxham helped visitors to Bundaberg's Agro-Trend event identify mental illness.
Posing the question: “How are you? Assessing mental health in your community,” the presentation outlined strategies anyone could use to assess their own or their families’ mental health.
“The presentation includes the types of questions you may ask and the patterns of behaviour to look for. I also discuss the necessity of referral if you suspect someone is mentally unwell, but also look at ways of promoting positive mental health," Dr Moxham said.
“As a mother of a 14-year-old female teenager and a three-year-old girl who has always worked full-time as well as studied, I am acutely aware that there is a fine line between mental well-being and mental illness.
“The message I promote ... is to look after your mental health - if you don't then who will?" Dr Moxham is a registered general and endorsed psychiatric nurse and a member of numerous community committees including the Rockhampton District Health Council and the Queensland Mental Health Review Tribunal.
She has also worked at the University for the past nine years, is a senior lecturer in Health & Human Performance and recently completed her PhD which was titled: “Housing and mental health: living in a regional Australian community with a serious mental illness".
