Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

HONORARY DOCTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY 

Martand Joshi, BSc(Hons), MSc Bombay, PhD California, is a renowned academic with a research background in geology. He has been involved in extensive research and academic endeavours in the fields of geochemistry, mineralogy, crystallography and petrology.

Martand is a former Honorary Consul for India and a member of many professional and cultural organisations and committees. He has acted as Vice-Chairman to the Geological Society of Australia, Victoria Division, and was the founding Vice-President of Indian Descendent Engineers and Scientists Australia Incorporated. He has also served as President of the Australia India Society of Victoria, the NRI Welfare Society for Australia and was Vice-President of the India Australia Club of Victoria.

In 2006, Martand was appointed to the position of International Cultural Adviser for CQUniversity's Melbourne and Sydney Campuses.  In this role he assists students to manage the challenges associated with adapting to a different culture, as well as helping staff to understand how students' ethnic backgrounds affect their study experience.

Dr Joshi has been a dedicated supporter of CQUniversity through regular advisory visits and attendance at all Melbourne graduation ceremonies.

In recognition of his contribution to CQUniversity, Martand Joshi will be conferred with the University's highest award for recognition of service, the honorary degree of Doctor of the University.
