Mack the Knife is back in town!

The Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music is proud to announce its first music theatre production for 2005: 'The Threepenny Opera' by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

CQCM Sub-Dean Judith Brown said the show features the talents of the Bachelor of Music Theatre students in all year levels.

PhotoID:2171 “This show is a land-mark in the history of theatre and music theatre, and features the well-known song 'Mack the Knife' which has become a jazz standard over the years, having been recorded by Bobby Darin (1959) Ella Fitzgerald (1960) and Frank Sinatra (1986),” Judith Brown said.

“However, the play has a strong social message amidst all of its sly humour and high theatricality. Brecht and Weill set the play in London, in a world controlled by gangsters, pimps, beggars and thieves. Mack the Knife is an infamous womaniser and street criminal who seems to have the police and civil officials in his pocket, getting away with all manner of corrupt activity. The music and the play highlight to us the harsh truth of this corrupt world that still resonates today”.

Judith Brown said that the students have also been involved in developing the production including its technical aspects and the creation of the costumes and set.

PhotoID:2172 “The Music Theatre course is a very hands-on course allowing students to perform as well as learn how things happen behind the scenes.”.

The season is strictly limited to four performances on Thursday April 21 from 8pm, Friday April 22 from 8pm, and Saturday April 23 from 2pm and 8pm.
