New tables create more chemistry for students

Learning scientific elements can sometimes be a chore for high school students, but with the help of a new CQUniversity initiative science now has a new look.
CQUniversity has produced full colour, scientific periodic tables for all year 11 and 12 students in Rockhampton, Mackay and Bundaberg in response to need identified by university lecturer Leanne Voss.
Science lecturer Leanne Voss shows off the new periodic tables produced for high school students.Ms Voss said high school students were not provided with comprehensive periodic tables at school and often resorted to the Internet to find a more suitable tool.
"Students do not have easy access to a periodic table other than a simplified one that is included as part of their text. By provision of this one by CQUniversity, a lot more information about chemical elements is made available," she said.
"This information can then be utilised by both teachers and students to support other topics covered in the syllabus, for example boiling and melting points, electronegativity values and electronic structures."
She said the provision of periodic tables to schools was seen as an initiative to open lines of support to science teachers in Central Queensland schools.
"We consider it important to be involved in teaching and learning activities with schools and would like to help out when possible if the need arises."
