Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Uni part of push for Asset Management Council chapter 

CQUniversity has joined Asset Management Council members and Gladstone industry representatives in a push to establish a CQ region chapter of the AMC...

A recent (March 20) forum at CQUniversity Gladstone included AMC speakers and representatives of leading industries such as NRG (Gladstone Power), Rio Tinto, Gladstone Ports Corporation and Downer EDI Engineering.

Participants also discussed the government-funded CQUniversity Gladstone initiative to develop a 'staircase' of lifelong learning, providing a seamless transition through the different education sectors.

Those presenting seminars included Dr Pierre Viljoen, Dr Patrick Keleher and Associate Professor Gopi Chattopadhyay from CQUniversity and AMC representatives Deryk Anderson and Jim Kennedy.

Industry leaders participating included Mark Greenway, GM operations support services and maintenance, Gladstone Port; Kerry Simper, Reliability Engineers; Romeo Dantoc, Electrical Engineer, Boyne Smelters Ltd; Kevin Ramm, Principal Asset Management Engineer, Stanwell; Ron Elliott, Downer, EDI, Engineering; Kevin Hancock, consultant and part-time faculty member CQUniversity; Glenn Schumacher, GM NRG Gladstone operations; Benjamin Hayden, Manager Technical Services, NRG, Philip Immoos from Maintenance Management Program, CQUniversity, Roza Kalantary, consultant and part-time faculty member CQUniversity and Jim Cullen, General Operations Manager, Monadelphous.

"This proposed initiative will provide opportunity for partnership with the University, professional bodies and industries for the continual improvement of the awareness, knowledge and skills in the area of asset management and maintenance engineering and management," Assoc Prof Chattopadhyay said.

"The establishment of a local chapter of the Asset Management Council will allow local companies to have access to national and international technologies, experts from universities and industries and valuable contacts for addressing current and future needs of industry.

"There can be useful affiliations with a range of international organisations, including the Society for Maintenance Reliability Professionals, the UK-based Institute of Asset Management, the International Foundation for Research into Maintenance, the South African Maintenance Association, the Plant and Maintenance Association of Canada and the Society of Logistic Engineers, as well as local affiliations with Systems Engineering Society of Australia and the Risk Management Society of Australia."

There is a proposal for a postgraduate conference to be held in Gladstone in the area of asset management and maintenance.

Meetings will be held once in each quarter of the year at CQUniversity Gladstone and anyone who is involved in plant asset management and maintenance is welcome to attend.
