CQU international students now call Melbourne home

Aurelia Ginevra – Division Manager, AIC Graduations, Melbourne International Campus – recently caught up with CQU graduates, Jorge Fernando Vasquez and Kabir Jabbal, recipients of the Campus Awards for Leadership at CQU Melbourne.

Jorge Fernando Vasquez completed a Bachelor degree in Industrial Engineering and seven years’ experience in industry in Chile prior to attending CQU Melbourne. So why leave home make the change and travel halfway across the world to start again in a new country? “I wanted to come to Australia. I am interested in sport and have great respect for the environment,” said the 27-year old husband and father. Jorge began his Master in Business Administration program at the Melbourne International Campus in November 2002. During that time, he made good use of the student support services offered, particularly the Learning Skills Unit where he was able to openly discuss ideas and obtain feedback in a friendly and comfortable environment.

PhotoID:1632 Jorge found the staff very approachable and willing to help. Academic staff describe him as “a very dedicated and conscientious student.” Jorge said a good experience with staff and students, together with an appreciation of Australia contributed to his family’s decision to now make Melbourne their permanent home.

Kabbir Jabbal (pictured) also calls Melbourne home... thanks to his mother.

“I had heard about CQU in India”, explained Kabir.

“My best friend recommended CQU. I had initially wanted to go to Europe to study but was put off by the trouble over there. I was guided in making the decision by my parents, in particular, my mother. So this is where I was sent to study, no questions asked”.

And according to Kabir – who is now employed by Seerpharma as an Analyst Programmer -- it was a good decision.

I was very shy in India. I came out here by myself and had to make my own decisions. That was a big step for me”, he explained. “I now have more confidence and have acquired a level of maturity”. As a student Kabir signed up for CQU Melbourne’s Training, Education & Careers Coaching (TECC) ‘I found that invaluable. I received guidance and support from Dr Tris Kerslake, TECC Manager. I worked for a petrochemical company for 2 days a week as work experience. I attended interview sessions, resume writing sessions and met my best friend through TECC.” With a Bachelor of Information Technology with Distinction, Kabir intends to undertake a CQU Masters of Business Administration.

“TECC has been crucial to my career success. I am involved with the Helpdesk, administration and programming. I began working for [Seerpharma] on a one-month contract and during that time, implemented a system called Domino. They were so impressed... that I am now a permanent staff member.” The shy, young boy from Haryana, India -- who listened to his Mum -- has come a long way, personally and professionally.
