Accountancy graduate Annette Ewart's experience is proof that taking a break to have a family is a career diversion - not a career killer.
The Bundaberg-based mother of two recently beat hundreds of applicants to secure her dream job as a graduate auditor with the Australian National Audit Office.
Annette Ewart - looking forward to new role in Canberra
"My family and I are all moving to Canberra in December ready for my start in January, which we are all very much looking forward to. I am very lucky to have such a supportive and understanding husband and family," Annette said.
Originally from Sydney, Annette worked as a personal assistant and legal secretary after leaving school but left full-time work to have a family.
During this time, as a stay-at-home mum, she worked part-time helping her husband with administration and accounts for the family business.
"When both my children started school I decided it was time to pursue my own career and return to full-time study with intentions to find full-time work in the accounting arena," Annette said.
"I completed the STEPS program in Term 1 2007 to ensure entry into the Accounting program and then completed the degree within 2½ years."
Annette said she enjoyed studying at CQUniversity Bundaberg as the lecturers and campus staff were helpful, and being on a smaller campus meant there was plenty of support.
"I have always wanted to study at Uni and obtain an degree, I have always enjoyed business and finance studies and I just hoped that someday I would be in a financial position where I could return to study," she said.
"Like many mature-age students, when I was young I was encouraged by family and peers to seek full-time employment not further studies. I have been fortunate to have been able to return to study at this time in my life, and by putting in the hard yards and late nights and having commitment and determination I have achieved great results in my accounting degree which has rewarded me with this great position in Canberra."
Annette said that outside work and study she enjoys "spending time with my family on weekends, reading, running and motorsports".
