Newton puts domestic violence in the spotlight but 'society awash with culpability'

Actor Matthew Newton has put the issue of domestic violence firmly in the spotlight, but our wider society needs to address the issue too.

That's according to domestic violence researcher Heather Nancarrow, who says that we should not just prevent specific cases of violence but also collectively reject tolerance of violence.

Ms Nancarrow says there's been too much tolerance of violence in the past.

"At the family level and also with our institutions including sports clubs, schools,  churches and the media, there's been a level of tolerance of violence, whereas there should be a zero tolerance mindset that we all share and work to promote."

Ms Nancarrow is Director of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research (CDFVR), based at CQUniversity's Mackay Campus.
