Poets hit the Criterion

Some of the best poets Queensland has to offer will step up to the mic at Rockhampton's Criterion Hotel, from 7pm on Wednesday, September 6, when the Queensland Writers Centre and Central Queensland University present 'Wordpool: Poets in the Pub'.

PhotoID:3265 “Rockhampton writers have been asking for a poetry event,” said Queensland Writers Centre CEO, Kate Eltham, “so we’re answering the call".

“We’ve gathered a fantastic and diverse ensemble, there will be something for everyone,” she said.

Poets reading at the Criterion consist of 2005 national bush poetry champion Laree Chapman; poetry stalwart Ross Clark ('Wishbones and Windfalls'); the Arts Queensland Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts Poet in Residence Louise Wallwein ('Skid 180'); local voice Kristin Hannaford ('Swelter') and emerging Brisbane poet Julie Beveridge ('Rock’n’Roll Tuxedo').

There will also be the chance for Rocky poets to stand and deliver during the open mike session, with prizes offered for best readings and performances.

“Wordpool reveals the interactive side of writing,” said Ms Eltham.

“Brisbane audiences have had a chance to see their favourite poets bring their words alive through readings and performance, and now it’s Rockhampton’s turn".

PhotoID:3266 Established by Queensland Writers Centre in 1997, 'Wordpool' showcases established and emerging writers in an intimate, theatrical format.

The Rockhampton event is part of National Poetry Week and is also supported by the Poets Union and the Australia Council. Central Queensland University’s Idiom 23 magazine Bauhinia Literary Award winners will also be congratulated on the night.

Wordpool tickets are available on the night at the Criterion Hotel for $10.
