Central Queensland University has hosted a commemorative breakfast on campus to celebrate International Nurses Day on Thursday, May 12.
Nurses from throughout the region were invited to attend the function at the Senior Common Room, Capricornia College – the University’s residential college.
Later in the day, nursing students took part in fun bed-making competitions to celebrate the international event. Nurses need specialised bed-making skills to prevent patients getting pressure ulcers.
This year’s theme is 'Nurses for Patient Safety: Targeting Counterfeit and Substandard Medicine'.
Head of the School of Nursing, Dr Lorna Moxham spoke to participants about the significance of International Nurses Day, while Rockhampton Hospital clinical pharmacology educator Barry Bryant gave a presentation on this year’s theme.
“International Nurses Day is always celebrated on May 12 as it is Florence Nightingale’s birthday,” Dr Moxham explained.
“It’s a day when we all reflect on the valuable contribution nurses make to the community.”.
Dr Moxham said nurses are a caring group of health professionals who are dedicated to the personal and social well-being of our society.
“Nurses are at work providing care and treatment 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”.
International Nurses Day, is a collaborative celebration between CQU, Hillcrest Hospital, Mater Hospital and Rockhampton Base Hospital.
