CQU Mackay IT student turns personal interest into professional career

In just over two years former Central Queensland University student David Elms has turned his favourite hobby into a career.
Mr Elms began a Bachelor of Information Technology at CQU Mackay in 2001 after realising he could be paid for what he previously enjoyed doing in his spare time - working with computers.
He urges school leavers and prospective mature-age students to ignore claims the industry offers limited job opportunities.
“By the time anyone who starts studying in 2004 finishes their degree there will surely be a change in the current IT job market,” he said.
“There will always be a need for quality employees who have IT knowledge as matters relating to technology won’t go away.” He believed work experience completed during the university holidays helped him gain his first position.
“Now that I’m working in the industry I would strongly recommend studying through CQU as the staff are extremely supportive and it makes a difference if you can consult a lecturer immediately about any concerns you may have relating to study.” Fast-tracking the three-year IT degree meant Mr Elms completed his studies in two and a half years. He has not dismissed the possibility of completing further study in the future.
