He has also developed CQUniversity's Master of Management (Engineering) which is scheduled to come on-line in 2011.

Awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1983 to study developments in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance instrumentation, Dr McPhail's research has primarily focused on image processing of radio astronomy images.

He holds a PhD from Macquarie and a Masters of Engineering Science from the University of Sydney. Earlier in his career, he served his apprenticeship as a Communications Technician in the Royal Australian Navy.

More recently, Dr McPhail has published and delivered papers internationally on the quality of first-year Engineering courses and the transition that school leavers undertake as they enter university Engineering programs.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers, Australia.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said "Alan joins us at a very exciting time as we establish new programs, extend our Engineering offerings to different campuses and look more closely at our relationships with industry in Gladstone and throughout Central Queensland".

"His posting at Gladstone is part of our organisational strategy to position more key people and roles outside of Rockhampton so we can build-up each campus."
