Investigative journalists of the future make connections

Students attending the CQ Connections school holiday program at Central Queensland University got a taste of where studying an undergraduate course in electronic journalism could take them.

Approximately 25 students from year 10 and 11 from towns such as Rockhampton, Mackay, Bundaberg, as well as Longreach, Blackall, Sarina, Miriam Vale, Agnes Water and Clermont spent some of their school holidays learning about courses offered at CQU.

PhotoID:156 At a session conducted by Associate Lecturer in Journalism, Jeff Young and 3rd year Journalism student Ross Green, students were informed about the careers that they could embark upon after successfully completing a degree in Electronic Journalism at CQU.

"There are varied and interesting careers available for graduates" said Young. "Apart from being journalists in radio, television, print and on the internet, there are also careers in public relations, media management, and corporate communications." A highlight of the session was a presentation made by John Schalch, Editor of Rockhampton's Morning Bulletin newspaper. John outlined the upsides and downsides in being a newspaper reporter. Schalch advised students, "One important thing to remember is that a regional paper is a good grounding for someone who wants to make a career in journalism. Regional journalists are highly sought after, as they get a good grounding in many areas of journalism that they might not otherwise get in a metropolitan newspaper." The journalism session was held during the five day CQ Connections program that is regularly run over the June/July School holidays.
