Central Queensland University hosted a Primary Science Experience for Rockhampton district primary school students on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20 as part of National Science Week 2003 activities.
About 150 students took part in interactive, hands-on science activities.
School of Biological and Environmental Science Primary Science Experience coordinator Sheila Jeffery said students had the opportunity to experiment with activities on the senses (hearing, sight and balance); measurement of sound, light and distance; laparoscopic surgery; \'Glitter Bug\' hand-washing (infection spread); blood pressure readings; anatomical models on display, as well as taking part in sport activities such as vertical jump tests and a “sit and reach” test.
Ms Jeffery said the aim of the event was to encourage curiosity and to enthuse students about science through hands-on activities.
“Feedback from the teachers and the students indicated that they had an enjoyable experience,” she said.
The Primary Science Experience was a cooperative venture involving the School of Biological & Environmental Science, School of Nursing, School of Health and Human Performance and Faculty of Engineering and Physical Systems.
