Electronics student plugs away and achieves degree

Mackay-based CQU student Paul Wilson has demonstrated the benefits of perseverance - after 10 years of study he has graduated from the Bachelor of Technology (Electronics & Communications) degree.

Mr Wilson actually enrolled at CQU back in 1995 but then changed programs in 1998 after completing an Advanced Diploma at TAFE.

He was able to use the flexibility of distance education to continue his study as he worked as a permanent employee or contractor for 13 different companies, in 9 cities across 2 States (Queensland and Western Australia).

Since starting his degree, Mr Wilson has married and separated and has become primary carer for his 2 children.

"Not long after my wife left I accepted a promotion at work to supervise 15 technical staff. This is why the last 18 months were the most challenging with the break up of my marriage, becoming a single parent of 2 and accepting a more demanding role at work," he said.

Mr Wilson is now Secondary Systems and Communications Supervisor for Ergon Energy and is pictured with his children after his graduation on March 12 in Rockhampton.
