Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

ISRD Miles Ahead 

Dr Bob Miles has been appointed Director, Institute of Sustainable Regional Development. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & Research) Ron Davies made announcement Monday 11 March.

"In the past it was publish or perish - today it is about partnerships or perish," said Dr Miles.

PhotoID:573 Dr Miles has a strong personal belief and commitment to multidisciplinary research and partnerships. He told UniNews he "believed in what the University was trying to achieve through the ISRD.".

Dr Miles holds a Doctor of Philosophy; Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours - Quantitative Genetics; and a Bachelor of Science - Mathematical and Statistical Modelling in Ecology.

He was most recently General Manager, Office of Rural Communities and General Manager, Client Information Services within the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) working with cropping, beef, sheep, intensive livestock, horticultural forest and fishing industries.

His substantive position for the last 5 years has been as Director, Regional Services for the Central Region. Dr Miles – w with DPI since 1986 – was responsible for the mapping the land capability and land suitability of the state. His research interests include the impact of climate change, Natural Capitalism, Natural Resource management and use, and Regional Planning/Governance/natural resource planning.

Dr Miles said he would work to increase CQU's international reputation as a university leading the field in integrated research and extension in sustainable regional development.

"I want to see stronger integrated partnerships with community, government and Industry sectors, a higher level of commitment and sponsorship of postgraduate research by government and industry, and greater penetration of contracted R&D and consultancies into the Asia Pacific Rim," explained Dr Miles.

“I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Bob and to thank Professor David Midmore and Associate Professor John Rolfe for their combined efforts in leading the ISRD for the past 12 months,” said Professor Davies.
