Indigenous music recordings gain wider audiences

CQU Associate Professor Karl Neuenfeldt has been active in music recording projects as part of his long-term interest in Indigenous music and performance.

A CD co-produced by him has been featured throughout a recent episode of ABC television's Message Stick program in a feature on the Lockhart River Art Centre on Cape York.

The recordings were done on-location in 2005 in collaboration with the community.

A CD by the Black Image Band of Wujal Wujal/Hopevale was awarded a Deadly Award for 'Best New Band' at the 2007 Deadly Awards at the Sydney Opera House.

An article on the CD's production has also been accepted by the US journal Popular Music and Society for an international issue on popular music and cultural heritage.

Dr Neuenfeldt is currently in post-production on 2 community CDs/DVDs of traditional and contemporary music and dance recorded and filmed on Yam and Warraber islands in the Central Islands of the Torres Strait. The small islands are located on the Great Barrier Reef and have rich traditions of music and dance.

The pilot project will resume in February 2008 on Masig and Poruma islands and is a collaboration between CQU, the National Library of Australia and the Torres Strait Regional Authority.

Dr Neuenfeldt is based at CQU Bundaberg and is part of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Education.
