Frequent traveller praises flexible study

Globe-trotting event and communication specialist Errol Jones is away from his Sydney home and office for a large part of each year, and often has deadlines to meet.

He thought this would present a huge challenge when he embarked on a Master of Letters- Creative Writing with CQU a few years ago.

But he has since found that "technological mobility, coupled with an equally mobile and flexible CQU learning system, catered to my less-than-usual needs".

"Add to this the emphatic and also flexible style of my tutor - Dr Lynda Hawryluk - and the challenges became surmountable," he said.

"If there's anyone out there thinking about study at a mature age, and with heavy work commitments, don't be deterred. It can be done.

"This has been a highly fulfilling and developmental exercise for me ... in fact, I am now in the process of planning the next step in my further education".

Mr Jones and his wife Justine operate Errol Jones Productions Pty Ltd and EJP Communications. They dispense event production, live show production and video production services, along with corporate communication services to major international and Australia/NZ corporations.

The couple - originally from Queensland - travelled to attend the CQU Rockhampton graduation on March 12.

Mr Jones had an earlier career path with IBM and was trained in America before becoming a senior manager for the company in Australia.

It was while in America that he became involved with IBM's event production division, arranging top entertainers at leading resorts to reward high-achieving sales executives. One of the highlights of this period was working on a show starring Ella Fitzgerald.

While in New York with production company, Caribiner Inc., he worked on shows in places like Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

Back in Australia he freelanced as a creative writer, producer, and director and then became senior producer for Bobby Limb's production company, 'The Showmen', staging major events and television specials.

His work still takes him overseas a lot, and involves staging entertainers such as James Morrison, David Campbell, and Human Nature.

Mr Jones is currently planning a major event in Vietnam for 2008.

"But, given that I'm accepted, working towards a doctorate at CQU will be a big part of what I do for the next few years," he said.
