CQUni welcomes Budget measures

CQUniversity has welcomed Tuesday night's Federal Budget, saying the Government has committed to continuing the student demand driven system, the improved indexation arrangements, and the rolling out of research funding announced in the 2009 budget.

Importantly for CQUniversity which has a high ratio of students from low socio-economic backgrounds, the Government is putting new money into equity measures as recommended under the base funding review.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman says this is a good budget for higher education, especially for regional universities.

Echoing sentiments from the Regional Universities Network, CQUniversity welcomes the commitment to provide $1400 per low SES student, the increase in partnership funding aimed at helping disadvantaged students aspire to and complete a university education, and the increase in loading for enabling courses.

The Government's additional support for maths and science teaching is also welcome, as are initiatives to improve the quality of teacher training; a National Mathematics and Science Education and Industry adviser in the Office of the Chief Scientist; and backing for the Australian Mathematics Science Institute.
