When completing secondary school more than 10 years ago, Jason Robson from Gladstone never thought university was an option for him.

By only completing basic courses in English, Maths and Science at school, he was unable to receive an OP score.

However, his time in school was not wasted. He completed a Secondary/TAFE Pilot Scheme through Toolooa High School which enabled him to gain employment as an apprentice Fitter and Turner. Whilst completing his apprenticeship he participated in block release for his certificate 3.

He also has recently completed his Certificate 4 in Competitive Manufacturing with his current employer Berg Engineering and has enrolled in CQUniversity's LIFT program.

LIFT is CQUniversity's newest preparatory program which is designed to fast-track pathways into university.

It is ideal for people that want to improve their qualifications or change their career paths but do not meet the traditional or standard requirements to gain entry into university.

"I have learned so many valuable skills from the program so far including study planners, time management, refining my reading and writing skills, maths, support networks and getting my heard around university study as a whole," Jason explained.

"I haven't studied in 10 years so this is a great course to ease me back into studies and help me refine my skills before I start with the more complex courses."

Jason aims to begin a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) after getting a taste of uni through LIFT.

The Lift program offers one free undergraduate course to allow students to try university life before enrolling in an undergraduate program.

Jason hopes to kick start his career as a mechanical engineer in the not too distant future.
