Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Health Promotion training a step in the right direction 

The Central Queensland CHIC* Partnership Council is taking a step in the right direction in building the capacity of local professionals to undertake health promotion throughout the region...

The Partnership Council has announced it is collaborating with CQUniversity to provide health promotion training to CQ CHIC members and other professionals in the wider community.

PhotoID:8503CQ CHIC Chairperson Sandra Corfield said: "this course is going to help us develop a shared and agreed understanding of what health promotion means for this region and enable local health professionals to identify opportunities for partnering with others on key health promotion issues within Central Queensland".

The course has been developed by Dr Tanya Bell and Dr Wendy Madsen of CQUniversity's Health Promotion Program and will cover topics such as:  Perceptions of Health Promotion, What is Health Promotion?, The practice of Health Promotion, Resources for Health Promotion, Health Promotion Partnerships and Health Promotion in Practice.

The courses will be offered as 2 half-days throughout the region, with the first in Rockhampton on March 10-11, followed by a course in Gladstone late March and in Emerald and Biloela in mid-April.  The course is targeted at CQ CHIC members and professionals from within health, government and other community settings. The CQ CHIC Partnership Council is a local primary health care collaboration aimed at enhancing service coordination and delivery.  Central Queensland *Connecting Healthcare In Communities (CQ CHIC) is one of 15 Partnership Councils across Queensland.  The partnership consists of organisations who directly and indirectly work to enhance the health of people in Central Queensland and receives funding from Queensland Health. 

Members of the CQ CHIC Partnership include: Capricornia Division of General Practice, CQ Rural Division of General Practice, Queensland Health, Bidgerdii Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Service, Combined Health Agencies (including Ozcare and Centacare), CQUniversity Australia and both the Mater and Hillcrest Private Hospitals. 

CQ CHIC intends to focus efforts on the prevention of chronic disease within Central Queensland, given the significant effects on the health sector and broader community.
