Graduating engineers present final projects to community

Final year engineering students presented their final year projects to an audience of potential employers and their proud families during GECon 2010 last week.

GeCon (Graduating Engineers Conference) is an annual forum that allows graduating engineers to showcase their talents to their peers, industry employers and the wider community.

Each final year project is managed and implemented independently by the student and is chosen to allow them to demonstrate their professional capabilities.

John Holland Operations Manager David Abbott said he was impressed by the standard presented by the 58 CQUniversity students at GECon.

"I am very impressed by this year's crop. I have seen a number of them on co-op placement working with us. I've done some graduate interviews and I am really impressed with the quality of students coming out of CQUniversity."

Among some of the interesting projects presented were:

  • The development of a prototype device to monitor locomotive wheel and track interactions and arc flash detection and analysis (Samuel Moohin);
  • A triple bottom line comparison of glue laminate bamboo beams and structural hardwood (Robert Jones);
  • Upgrade to the Barwon Highway (Matthew Hamilton);
  • Coal plant strategy for Tarong North Power Station (Fabian Murray); and
  • Fuel efficiency devices - a comparative study of engine performance and emissions (Wayne Sherry).

Graduating civil engineering student Stuart Harvey's project involved the upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Boundary Road and Olive Street. The project was undertaken in conjunction with Main Roads.

"The project involved analysing each intersection in their current state and under future traffic flows and determining what upgrades were required. I then designed and produced technical drawings for the highway and the intersections."

Stuart has recently been employed by Rockhampton Regional Council in their transport department and looks forward to working on similar projects.

The conference concluded with the John Holland Conference Dinner at the Heritage Village, Parkhurst.
