Toad experience excites teens

More than 40 teenagers saw a toad's heart beating outside its body for the first time as part of Siemens Science Experience at CQUniversity Rockhampton this week.

This was just one of the many hands-on activities the year 10 students had the chance to experience.

The students came from the Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast region, but also Gladstone, Boyne/Tannum, Blackwater, Theodore, Bundaberg, Emerald, Moura and Brisbane.

The 3-day event is designed to show students the fun and practical side of science and technology as well as provide a social activity for the teens on their school holidays.

Students are kept busy with activities such as bridge and motor construction, studying enzymes that form part of the immune system, building a computerised tone generator and testing a toad's heart with a variety of drugs.

Siemens Science Experience also provides students with the opportunity to learn about career and study opportunities and experience what life is like on a university campus.

Event coordinator in Rockhampton Pete Carseldine said Siemens Science Experience was designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating activities under the guidance of scientists who love their work.
