Brisbane celebrates diverse backgrounds
Published on 12 May, 2009
CQUniversity Brisbane International Campus staff and students recently took part in a 'multicultural day' to celebrate their diverse backgrounds.
Ten different nationalities were represented, including Iran, Myanmar (Burma), China, Samoa, Malaysia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, India, Sri Lanka, and of course, Australia.
People were dressed in traditional clothes from their countries and shared different information about their cultures.
At the Sri Lankan stall, participants played ‘find the eye of the elephant' (similar to ‘pin the tail on the donkey') and they had henna tattoos applied from the Indian stall.
Campus staff and students enjoyed making paper cranes at the Japanese stall, having names written in Chinese characters and listening to music from around the world.
No celebration of our multiculturalism would be complete without food and there was a great variety; samosas and pakoras from India, damper from Australia, kokis and munkavum from Sri Lanka, and lobak from Malaysia to name a few.
. At the end of the event we had all learned a little more about each other.
