Rockhampton High School Year 10 students considering university study took part in a valuable learning and study skills program at CQUniversity recently.

University staff and student mentors provided 17 high school students with learning and study skills that will assist them immediately at high school and also prepare them for tertiary study.

Coordinator for the program Catherine Spencer said the initiative had been purpose built to suit the needs of Year 10 students about to embark on their senior years and then onto a first-year undergraduate program.

"The purpose is to give students and their parents information that will help them make better, informed decisions about their future and to also assist with their SET plans," Ms Spencer said.

"The TAP program is an outreach program that aims to encourage participation in tertiary education by high school students traditionally under-represented in higher education."

Rockhampton High School student Scott Vidler said since completing the program he now knows that a university education is attainable.

"The TAP program allowed me to find out more about the size of the University and its range of programs and I now know that uni is achievable."

Student Prince Delantar said: "it was good to see what uni is like and it has prepared me more for it".

Meanwhile, Courtney Gordan said she was impressed with the information about OP scores, prerequisites and the costs of going to uni.

The TAP program, which is a joint initiative of CQUniversity and Education Queensland, is not restricted to students considering CQUniversity. It is open to all students considering tertiary study, at any level, at any tertiary institution.
