Gold Coast leads with Chinese New Year celebration

CQU Gold Coast International Campus has celebrated Chinese New Year with a lion dance and lunch for students at its Marine Parade facility.
The Hong Seng Lion Dance Troupe from Brisbane entertained Chinese, Korean, Malaysian, Thai, Japanese and Australian students and staff members, in what has become a campus tradition.
Campus Director Peter Mendham said the facility tried to celebrate the national holidays of all students.
"It becomes a little difficult now that the Gold Coast International Campus is home to students of 29 nationalities, but we enjoy Chinese New Yera especially because of the long and strong connection Australia has with China," he said.
"It is a little disappointing the Gold Coast didn't celebrate this important cultural event, but our campus will explore the possibility of a bigger celebration next year.
"Perhaps we could convince Cr Dawn Crichlow that the Southport Mall, just around the corner from the campus, would be a good venue for bigger Chinese New Year celebrations.
"Perhaps we could work with the Australia Fair Shopping Centre, other Mall retailers, the Gold Coast City Council and the Gold Coast Chinese community to have some celebrations in the Mall." CQU Gold Coast International Campus has been operating for three years and already has more than 350 students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Australian students who take advantage of the small class sizes, close contact with lecturers and staff, and the informal environment.
