Reconciliation Statement to be signed next month

Reconciliation Statement to be signed next month Representatives from Central Queensland University (CQU), the Darumbal people and Murri community are expected to sign a Reconciliation Statement on 11 August following the opening of the 10th annual Central Queensland Multicultural Fair.

The Statement, details of which are not available, acknowledges a commitment to a just and meaningful partnership of reconciliation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people throughout the CQU campuses and communities it serves.

“True reconciliation, though, is more than just words,” said CQU Vice Chancellor and President Glenice Hancock. “We have a responsibility to address issues of social justice and to teach students and staff about the cultures and experiences of indigenous peoples to help overcome prejudice.” As part of the Fair, thousands of attendees will witness this historic event. “The Multicultural Fair of course has entertainment and lots of good food and fun, but essentially, it’s always been about promoting understanding and cultural awareness here in Central Queensland,” explained Fair coordinator Gina Yarrow. More than 30 cultures are represented at Central Queensland’s foremost single-day event. The Multicultural Fair, which is expected to draw more than 25-thousand people, is produced by Central Queensland University (CQU) and ABC Capricornia with support from The Morning Bulletin.
