Program Coordinator Rickie Fisher said Perry had completed a very unique transition moving from being a Qantas International Flight Captain to becoming a secondary school Aerospace Studies teacher.

"It is not necessarily unique for a person to transition from working in one career then choosing to study to become a secondary school teacher of that subject area - the uniqueness lies in the subject area Perry has chosen.

"It would be difficult to find someone like Perry in Queensland who can say they were an International pilot for Qantas and now are a  qualified secondary school Aerospace studies teacher."

Mr Fisher said Perry's school-based placement reports indicated a high calibre content knowledge base and teaching ability in his chosen teaching area - an asset to any school.

As a Gold Coast resident, Captain McNeil completed the program by distance education, in between jetting to San Francisco and London, and is now qualified to teach both aerospace science and mathematics.

Captain McNeil began flying aircraft back in 1975 and worked his way up to pilot large aircraft like the 747-400 series in which he has captained since 2003.

In recent years he has been dabbling as a guest lecturer for high school aviation classes in Brisbane and Gold Coast and has also been working as a 737 trainer for Boeing, where he was bitten by the teaching bug.  He then decided to formalise his qualifications through CQUniversity's graduate teaching program.

Captain McNeil has had offers of a few teaching contracts on the Gold Coast and Brisbane between flights as well as supply teaching.

He said he it quite comfortable with this until he is ready to "sever the umbilical cord from Mother Qantas".

Captain McNeil will officially graduate from CQUniversity on July 19.
