Vice-Chancellor and President John Rickard this week (Sept 23) announced his intention to retire from CQUniversity Australia at the end of July 2009, upon completion of his 5-year contract.
"My wife, Veronica, and I believe it is time, finally, to make time for us," said Professor Rickard who came to CQUniversity in August 2004 from Southern Cross University, where he was also Vice-Chancellor.
"When we came out to Australia 40 years ago, we never dreamed we would make our home, family and careers here. They have been wonderful, challenging, fulfilling years, not least of which has been our time here at CQUniversity," Professor Rickard said.
In a letter to the University community Chancellor Fritschy said Council remained supportive of the Vice-Chancellor and his team as they continue to finalise the University's Restructure and secure the University's position as the university of choice, among students (international and domestic), industry, and government stakeholders and customers.
"We value all the contributions John has made to the University since arriving here... It is the Council's wish that the present momentum continues," said CQUniversity Chancellor Rennie Fritschy.
Over the next 9 months the Vice-Chancellor said he would work to complete the CQUniversity Restructure, introduce new products and services, respond to the Review of Higher Education, and lobby government and other stakeholders for a new funding formula that is more appropriate for regionally-based universities such as CQUniversity.
The Council of CQUniversity resolved to commence the search for a new Vice-Chancellor. Professor Rickard has agreed to continue beyond the end of his contract, if required, until the appointment of the University's fifth Vice-Chancellor is made.
