Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

CQU part of mining safety delegation to China 

CQU Director of University Relations Ricki Jeffery (pictured right at head of table) has recently been part of a China Coal Mission supported by the Queensland Government.

Also pictured (below) is one of the delegation's presentations.

Ms Jeffery is the project manager representing a new CQU-led initiative called Safe-EfficientChinaCoal.com.au.

PhotoID:1719 The initiative has been established to respond to a need expressed by leading Chinese authorities and coal experts to increase safety, reduce fatalities and prevent disaster to ensure sustainable and profitable mining.

Safe-EfficientChinaCoal.com.au is a strategic union among experienced leading education and training providers in Australia who specialise in delivering programs in safe industrial operations and relations, corporate training, human resources and international trade.

Team members from CQU include Professor Peter Smith, Yvonne Toft and Dr Lee Di Milia.

Safe-EfficientChinaCoal.com.au is a set of programs and services designed to be delivered in China and in Australia to train middle and senior management in the coal sector about issues related to productivity, health and safety in the workplace.

has posted information and photos about the delegation's visit, which coincided with a major coal mine disaster and a major mining expo in China.

The Chinese text translation is:.

"Invited by the State Administration of Work Safety, the mining safety delegation from Queensland, Australia visited our institute on the morning of 1st November. Mr Duan Xuhua, the Vice President of North China Institute of Science and Technology and Deputy Director of the National Safety Training Centre of Coal Mines met with the delegation.

PhotoID:1720 The delegation visited the human-machine lab, mechanical and electrical integration base. They also participated in a safety technology exhibition tour and campus tour. Both parties then held a meeting at the VIP lounge at NO. 2 building and had a meaningful discussion on the potential for cooperation. Among the Chinese hosts, there were officials from the Safety and Environment and the Mechanical and Electrical faculties, also the Safety Science and R&D Department.".
