Mexican experiences Aussie life at CQU

Mexican university student Rafael Lima has travelled half way around the world to capture an Aussie educational experience here in Central Queensland.
Rafael believes his study of mechanical engineering at Central Queensland University Rockhampton will help kick start his career as an engineer on his return to Mexico next year.
Rafael is among the first group of 44 students selected from four countries - Mexico, India, Colombia and Cambodia - to study in Australia this semester, through a new $8.1 million Peace Scholarship Trust, an initiative of IDP Education Australia. Twenty-seven universities across Australia, including leader in international education CQU, have provided fee-waiver places to international students through the program.
Making the most of his stay in Australia, Rafael has combined his educational experience with a cultural one by living at CQU's residential college, Capricornia College.
"I am really enjoying my stay in Rockhampton ... it's completely different from Mexico City. Mexico City has 25 million people and not as many beautiful gardens and of course no kangaroos," Rafael explained.
"I am liking my courses at CQU and have overcomed my initial trouble with the language.
"What amazed me the most about engineering at CQU is the amount of industry sponsors.".
Rafael's aim is to be an industrial engineer, planning high quality, productive manufacturing processes which improve the products needed by Mexicans. Rafael believes a bicultural educational experience is very important in helping him understand the evolving gobal society.
Staying on-campus in Rockhampton has enabled Rafael to experience cultural diversity, making new friends with other international and Australian students.
"I really like staying on-campus - you don't feel alone. And of course we get to enjoy a lot of really good food. They have really good ice-cream here.".
Rafael's room mates and new found friends will get to help him celebrate a milestone this week when he turns 21.
Rafael will continue his studies at CQU until Winter next year, when he will head back to Mexico to complete his degree there and move into his career.
Through the Peace Scholarship Trust, IDP Education Australia aims to promote global peace and understanding through international education experiences. The Trust provides scholarships for meritorious and deserving students from around the world.
