Farewell to Student Association's human rights activist

By Gayl Redfern

A sad au revoir to Hannah Pepson and a thank you for being the 'CQUniversity Student Association (CQUSA) Student Director South Queensland Combined' for the past 3 years.

During this time, it would be difficult to find a person at CQUniversity Brisbane who did not know Hannah, with her fantastic smile and sparkling personality.

Elaborating further would only serve to embarrass Hannah, however she has been an outstanding ambassador and will be missed at the Brisbane Campus.

As is the life of focused students, Hannah is a very busy person.  Successfully she juggled studies, assignments, work, family, friends, yet more assignments, as well as other annoyances of student life such as having to find more suitable accommodation and the upheaval of relocation during assignment and exam deadlines.

In 2008, Hannah represented Papua New Guinea at the 4th UNESCO Leadership Forum held at the University of Connecticut, USA.

Ms Pepson was selected out of over 700 applicants worldwide to attend the conference held in Storrs, Connecticut, USA.

"It was an honour to represent my country on such a global scale and to discuss critical Human Rights Issues that stigmatize our global societies," she said.

Ms Pepson felt compelled to attend the conference while volunteering at the Amnesty International Australia office in Brisbane, where she has joined the campaign to Stop Violence Against Women.

"I am a firm believer that we need to Stop Violence Against Women in Papua New Guinea.  It is an appalling problem in our society today, an act that should be deemed totally unacceptable.  Violence against women was never part of our culture, and culture cannot be used as an excuse to blanket serious domestic violence issues."
