CQU student Matthew Daly is Central Queensland's 2004 Champion Army Reserve Soldier.

Matthew is an Army Reserve Private with the 42nd Battalion, and he was presented with his award on September 11 at a formal function in Rockhampton.

PhotoID:1445 The award recognises the effort of a soldier throughout a year, and is presented annually by the 42nd Battalion Association as part of its Salamaua Day commemorations.

Matthew, otherwise known as Private Daly, has been an infantry soldier in the Army Reserve for four years.

He said that he joined to support his studies as an information technology student at Central Queensland University's Gladstone campus.

"I couldn't think of a better part-time job at the time, and it's been great," he said.

Since he joined the Army Reserve, Matthew has been involved in major exercises, including an exchange to Hawaii, Exercise Crocodile 03, and a Queensland military skills competition earlier this year.

42nd Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Bill Byrne said that Matthew was a credit to the unit, and he was highly deserving of the award.

"Private Daly has shown enthusiasm, talent, skill, and commitment as an Army Reserve soldier," Lieutenant Colonel Byrne said.

"He is very popular amongst his peers, and works very well in a team environment, which is vital in the Army Reserve training environment.".

The 42nd Battalion has depots in Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mackay, Biloela, and Emerald.
