Emergency Management System 'enables best practice'

CQUniversity has signed off on an Emergency Management System (EMS) which will enable it to meet best practice while also achieving compliance with the demanding requirements of Queensland Building and Fire Safety Regulations.

The EMS components - which have the trade name of Fire Evacuation Program (FEP) - consist of an online interactive training program which is able to deliver a large proportion of the training, instruction, assessment and records management which is a requirement of the legislation.

The development, delivery and ongoing management of the EMS will be delivered conjointly by Concept Safety Systems (CSS) and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS).

The FEP grew from a "simple idea" when the QFRS State Manager Eric Sheehan used some of the static materials such as evacuation drawings as the basis for interactive computer programs.

The successful implementation of an ongoing (FEP) is dependent on developing a solid picture of the current status of compliance with the Queensland Fire and Rescue and Safety Regulation.  Therefore a Compliance Audit and Report will be undertaken for each building which is owned and occupied by the University.

The establishment of an Emergency Control Organisation (Warden structure), assembly areas, emergency procedures and fire and evacuation plans will occur for all buildings on our campuses.

CSS will develop and also maintain all evacuation diagrams for all general and accommodation areas on each of the required sites.

This alone is a huge project and will bring all diagrams up to a standard and the plans will be constant across the University.

The project has a timeline of 4 months, with Bundaberg Campus being first on the list, commencing on December 7 this year. Rockhampton Campus is to commence on January 19, followed by Gladstone and Mackay.

Narelle Stubbins, Manager of Health and Safety is the Manager for this significant exciting new project.

Staff are able to preview the Fire Evacuation Plan.   The FEP will be tailor-made and easily updated for CQUniversity campuses.
