Single mum from Philippines a high achiever in Sydney

Single mother Melanie Estoque had the motivation of showing her son the value of hard work as she completed her Master of Accounting degree at CQUniversity Sydney.

Coming from the Philippines, Melanie overcame language and cultural differences to achieve 5 High Distinctions and 6 Distinctions and was chosen to speak as a State Director awardee and graduates' representative at her September graduation ceremony.

Melanie attributes her success to preparation, interaction and reading all materials before her classes. She also believes it is important to have challenges.

The challenges she faced with studying full-time, working to sustain her family and being a mother still allowed her to focus and commit to her goals whilst providing her with the opportunity to develop.

"Without challenges you do not grow," she said.

In addition to her recent commitments on campus and her family, Melanie also finds time to participate in charity work and feeding the homeless.

She is now also working full-time as an accounts payable clerk at Primary Health Care (PHC), Leichhardt.

"I started with PHC way back in May 2006 as a medical receptionist. I was offered an accounts payable clerk position when I told them I would resign in November 2007 to look for course-related work," Melanie said.

"Recently I was asked if I would be interested in working with PHC as one of their accountants because they just acquired another company. I am still praying for this to materialise, otherwise I will look for an accounting job. I would really want to work as an accountant."

Melanie plans to secure a Chartered Accountants (CA) qualification by next year, starting with one module to ensure she can manage her time due to a new commitment.

"About a month ago I have also accepted voluntary work as an accountant to manage the books of my church, Maroubra Baptist Church," she said.

"I will be trained by the church's previous accountant, hopefully by next week after work. I owe to Him (God) all that I have."
