Uni staff to dig deep and help charities

CQUniversity staff are being encouraged to dig deep and give to worthwhile charities through a new Workplace Giving Program launched this week.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman and members of the University's Workplace Giving Program Steering Committee recently toured the hanger of the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service, one of the charities participating in the giving program.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Scott Bowman with Senior Base Pilot Vince Corcoran at RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.Professor Bowman took the opportunity to compare the helicopter to the light aircraft he is used to flying and commented on the expertise required by pilots and the health staff in helicopter rescues.
"The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service is an expensive operation requiring highly trained staff, but one that the region has come to rely on in remote emergencies," he said.
The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service on average gets one call out every day, and offers a free service to the community covering the whole of Central Queensland from Maryborough to Mackay and from Longreach to Swains Reef.
The Workplace Giving Program is a scheme that allows staff to donate tax deductible gifts to charities such as the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service direct from their salaries, giving staff another way to contribute to the wellbeing of our community.
Deductions are made before tax, which means that staff are only taxed on the remainder of their salary. It is a preferred method for most charities to receive payments as it allows them to receive a steady source of regular income. In launching this service the University is providing an easy way for staff to donate to charities, whilst helping those most in need in our community.
The charities that are included in the program were chosen by staff following a staff survey. In addition to the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service they include The Australian Red Cross, Cancer Council Qld, The Fred Hollows Foundation, Royal Flying Doctors Service, The Salvation Army and CQUni Cares.
CQUniversity's Workplace Giving Program Steering Committee roured the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Service recently.CQUni Cares allows staff to donate money to assist students in financial need. Many students are forced to abandon their studies due to financial constraints and this allows us all to help make their journey a little easier. The Workplace Giving Program will be a great benefit for staff, the community and also the University - making the University a better place to work.
