Rocky's evening language classes back on calendar

After a successful relaunch in 2003, Rockhampton's evening language classes are back on the calendar.

This year, French, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin classes are offered via the Language Centre at Central Queensland University.

The classes will be held from March 10 onwards on Wednesday nights from 6-8pm, or on other nights that might be more convenient to the groups.

For information about enrolments, please contact Dee-Anne Emblem at CQU's Language Centre on 4930 6422. Call Margaret on 49271911 for information about French classes.

Language Centre spokesperson Paulo Vieira said languages could open up a world of opportunities for employment, travel and cultural enrichment.

"Living in an English speaking country as we do, it is easy to forget about the tremendous variety of languages used daily in the rest of the world. Knowledge and appreciation of a second language amongst native English speakers is still a relative rarity. As the world gets more globalised, a second language is certainly going to provide you with that ‘edge’ in business or socially. This is in spite of the breadth and reach of English as the world language today.

"Apart from which, it is great fun to learn a second language. Give it a go,” Mr Vieira said.

This year's Japanese classes will be delivered by CQU Bachelor of Learning Management (secondary) graduate Chiaki Matsuo, who spent last year teaching at a primary school in Mackay. This year, she is juggling her Language Centre classes with tutoring of individuals in the community.

Spanish classes will be delivered by Javier Millanes. Javier is a highly experienced Spanish teacher currently undertaking a Masters qualification from Spain in ‘teaching Spanish as a second language’. Photos: CQU Language Centre's Paulo Vieira with Japanese language class leader Chiaki Matsuo.
