Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Elusive Tinkerfrog focus of Masters research

To try and save the seriously endangered Kroombit Tinkerfrog found at Kroombit Tops in Central Queensland, part-time postgraduate student John Clarke (pictured) is researching the habitat and reproduction of the species.

PhotoID:1379 In March 2001, Mr Clarke commenced a Masters of Applied Science by research at CQU Rockhampton.

Mr Clarke said the species is impossible to census accurately because only the males can be reliably located, and only when they are calling.

“Our best estimate is that the total adult population is between 70 and 300,” he said.

The species is restricted to nine small patches of rainforest scattered throughout an area of around 700 hectares.

Factors such as disease, climate change, feral pigs, horses and cattle, as well as the impact of high-intensity fire have contributed to the decline in Tinkerfrog numbers.

Mr Clarke said one of the aims of his research is to provide a model of habitat and microhabitat requirements for the species.

A further aim is to provide a model of calling (which is related to reproduction) in relation to seasonal and climatic variables.

PhotoID:1380 The next milestone to be reached is completion of the data analysis and the thesis.

Through his research, Mr Clarke hopes to improve the conservation status of the species, and to enhance his ability to design and conduct ecological research.

Upon completion of his research in early 2005, Mr Clarke hopes to continue working to help threatened frogs, and perhaps teach in a tertiary institution.
