Several CQUniversity students and graduates were involved with the event, including alumni Brett Ruff and Jay Callaghan who competed as cyclists and were members of the organising committee. Another alumus to compete was Cameron Jennings, who is now Assistant Coach to the Queensland Senior Track Cycling Team.

Meanwhile, Zac Deller broke the 'flying lap' record during the Cup on Wheels. The 16-year-old local club member is a product of the 2006 Talent ID Program conducted by CQUniversity. The previous record was held by Olympic Gold medallist Ryan Bailey, showing the scale of the achievement.

The University's partnership with Rockhampton Cycling Club is strong and multi-faceted, involving sponsorship, research, access to facilities and talent identification. In addition, a number of students, staff members and graduates have been involved with the club and the University is part of the national Elite Athlete Program (which enables athletes to fit their studies around competition commitments).

"Rockhampton has a great heritage of word-class cyclists - so the University is associated with a world-class activity," said Suzi Blair, Director of CQUniversity Office of Development & Graduate Relations.

Ms Blair said the cycling sponsorship was a key community engagement activity for the University which "fuels our ambition to be the most engaged University".

"Our sponsorship of the Cup on Wheels underpins the mutually beneficial relationship and allows the University to support healthy activity which is a key research focus and area of need in CQ, in a way that's accessible to a broad cross-section of the community," she said.

"The sponsorship also promotes development of the event as a highlight of the cycling calendar and assists in the development of Rockhampton's reputation as a sporting city and the range of leisure options available to locals and visitors."
