Hooked on Fish

CQU has partnered with the Department of Primary Industries to study the impact of recreational fishing in Queensland.

Although anecdotal evidence about the importance of recreational fishing exists, there is little quantitative evidence about the value of recreational fishing and its influence on regional economies.

PhotoID:555 For example, some recreational fishing at major water storages could be generating almost as much economic activity in a region as irrigation. CQU and DPI will provide a definitive study of the value of recreational fishing at three freshwater sites, allowing for careful evaluation of public programs, fish stocking programs and other management, monitoring and enforcement options.

Researchers, including CQU’s John Rolfe, will identify the importance and value of key factors influencing demand for recreational fishing. They will report on the impact of recreational fishing on local economies and offer models that may improve fishing opportunities at different sites.
