Softly-spoken Peter a vigorous defender of justice

By the time Peter Hallinan finally packs up his office at the end of January, aged 71, he will have spent almost 25 years at CQUniversity and its predecessor institutions.

First arriving as a lecturer in child psychology, Peter's career took a sharp right-turn in 2001 when he was appointed as CQUniversity's first student ombudsman.

He has since become known for his calm exterior, often masking a vigorous campaign for correct decisions.

Peter noted that his role required him to sit independently between students and academics, defending whichever position was the most just. He has been involved with cases across the regional campuses, international campuses and distance education system.

"I have learnt to assess situations based on natural justice, due process and what the ordinary person would think," he said.

Peter said he was pleased to see a reduction in disputes in recent years, due to better policies and processes and a stronger role for the Student Association.

Outside the campus, Peter is well known in the community due to his involvement in church choirs and bushwalking groups.

CQUniversity will appoint a new student ombudsman early in 2010.
