CQU continues sponsorship of cycling classic

CQU has confirmed it will continue as the major sponsor of the Rockhampton Cup on Wheels, the two-day cycling spectacular run by the Rockhampton Cycling Club.

The event will held at the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome, Rockhampton, on January 20-21.

CQU joined forces with the Rockhampton Cycling Club in 2005 and this partnership for 2006 and beyond is a natural extension of relationships that has been building with the cycling community over several years.

CQU\'s School of Health & Human Performance has developed research linkages and industry collaborative scholarships with Queensland Cycling and the Queensland Academy of Sport.

CQU and the Rockhampton Cycling Club have worked collaboratively in talent identification of junior emerging cyclists, which resulted in Phillipa Hindmarsh, a product of this program winning a National Junior U17 Sprint Title at the 2005 National Junior Track Cycling Championships in Melbourne earlier this year.

Cycling-related research continues to be carried out in the community, with the most recent achievement involving the School\'s Technical Officer, Greg Capern.

Mr Capern attended the HESTA (Health and Exercise Science Technologists Association) conference in Brisbane in November where he won the peer-reviewed best paper award for his work on \'PACER - a remote heart rate monitor\'. This heart rate monitor is being utilised by nationally-recognised cycling coach, Ken Tucker of the Rockhampton Cycling Club, as part of the training regime of his elite squad.

CQU student involvement also plays an important role in this relationship, with students taking practicum placements in event management during the lead-up and during the event.

The 2005 Rockhampton Cup on Wheels attracted over 160 riders from across Australia, from juniors through to masters athletes.
